A PM2.5 air quality sensor detects the concentration of fine inhalable particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air, which is 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller. These sensors typically use the laser scattering principle to work: a laser shines on the air, particles scatter the light, and a detector collects and processes the scattered light to determine the number and size of particles. The sensor then calculates the concentration of PM2.5, often reporting it in micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³).
